Poll: Should I change Boogerhead's Name on Blog

I was told that boogerhead was not a good name for a cute little girl. So, I am taking a poll to see if people think I should change my blog name. Please vote in the poll on the left and suggest a title if you'd like in the comments section.Voting ends Friday at midnight. Thanks!

Well, results are in! The name stays. Sorry if you voted no.

Boogerhead and pumpkin smoothies

So, we made pumpkin smoothies this morning. They are awesome. We used some yogurt (made from raw milk so it is more liquidy), ice, about a cup of pumpkin puree, cinnamon and a little raw sugar. The texture is a little gritty, but it is ok. But, the taste is delicious. Boogerhead loves it. We also got real cheese yesterday. The cow milk cheese tastes like cream cheese and is almost the same texture. The goat cheese I'm not so fond of. Tastes weird to me. I think next time I will buy Amish cheese with the co-op.

Silk Pure Almond Review

I've posted previously about my family trying to go organic. Our first foods were butter and milk. For milk I decided to go with almond milk. There are two reasons for this. First is we don't like soy milk. Second, was taste and I have tried almond milk before and felt the taste was decidedly better. So, I actually chose the cheapest at our grocers, which happened to be Silk Pure Almond.
I love this stuff! My husband loves it, my 5 yr old loves it and apparently so does her cat, Possum.
We have tried it as drinking milk and cooking milk. As for drinking milk, it is thicker than regular milk but not in an unpleasant way. It also tastes like almonds!! Not overpowering but just right. It also isn't as sweet as some almond milks, which I like. I guess I should note we bought the original. It also comes sweetened and unsweetened. For cooking with, it has been great so far. We have had it in pancakemix, cereal, oatmeal, and even macaroni and cheese. There is no almond taste to your food. It taste just like it should. I was impressed with the mac and cheese as I expected to taste almond. Oh and we made cookies and they were delicious. For some foods like oatmeal and pancakes, I actually think the thickness of the almond milk is a benefit. It makes the pancakes lighter and the oatmeal creamier.
Overall, I give it an A. The price is right, and the taste is awesome. This will be our family's milk from now own.

Boogerhead's Daddy

Ok, so I have posted before we are trying to eat more organically and live more organically. And I have posted about boogerhead's daddy being uncooperative. He finally agreed to at least try stuff. So, I bought almond milk last night. He tries it this morning and says.....he likes it!!!! He drank 2 glasses!!!! YEA!!!! Score one for being healthy!! I am so happy. This is my man who only wants meat and taters and good old processed foods and junk. I just may win him over yet. If you have any good vegetable dinner recipes or know of organics we should try...please comment those here! Thanks!!

Also, I am now the proud member of a organic produce co-op, buyer of farm fresh eggs and goat cheese, and I have found a health food store to buy from!!! I am super excited!

Pumpkin Pancakes

Well, while boogerhead was resting I made pumpkin pancakes with our pumpkin puree yesterday. They turned out great. There is a great recipe on Allrecipes on how to make puree. You will probably have to adjust time depending on the size of your pumpkin. We used a huge pumpkin instead of the small ones. Anyway, I took the easy way and just added a couple of tablespoons(heaping) to my pancake mix, added a little vanilla and cinnamon. It was delicious. The cinnamon really brings out the flavor. FYI, I used the pumpkin I mashed with the potato masher instead of the puree from the blender. I forgat to mention you can make your puree two ways after cooking pumkin. They suggest a blender and another said you could add alittle water and mash like potatoes. I did both. I like the mashed better as there is more pumpkin flavor, But if pulp bothers you I suggest the blender. Allrecipes has some other great recipes for pumpkin as well.

Strepthroat beats Boogerhead

Well, boogerheads throat looks worse. She keeps getting up and running around after the meds kick in. So, I had to banish her to her bed in her room to rest. She hasn't been in her bed in probably a month as she has been sleeping with me since daddy went to third shift. It's weird, out of 5 kiddos, she is the only one we ever let sleep with us on a regular basis. I think we are doing what is called attached parenting. Either way it works for us and she has a great appreciation for family. So, no adventures today. Maybe tomorrow if I can get her to rest.

Update on boogerhead

We watched the Magic School Bus episode "Inside Ralphie" and looked at pictures online of the strep bacteria and white blood cells. We are postponing our expeiments till boogerhead gets some rest. Her idea. After seeing what was hurting her throat and learning she needed lots of rest and her antibiotic, she is resting on the couch quietly. This child is NEVER still or quiet, so this is amazing. I told her yesterday all this stuff about germs and rest, but it took seeing it for herself to actually rest. I am really enjoying this way of doing school. We learn alot and it is enjoyable. Well, ta-ta for now folks. Be back when boogerhead feels better or does something worth posting...whichever comes first!

Cooking with Boogerhead

So.....we or I should say boogerhead, finished making cookies. And other than me putting them in the oven, and removing them from said oven, she did it entirely on her own. As proof I will tell you there are a few spots of unstirred flour bits in a few cookies. She was so proud of herself. However, she kept wanting to eat the dough. Silly boogerhead!

This is her first ever attempt at making ANYTHING!!!!

She had a little trouble with spacing them apart, but she did GREAT!
Finished product

They are very soft and taste like pumpkin oatmeal. But, they are yummy. We got the recipe off of Allrecipes (pumpkin cookies I). They are where I also got the recipe on how to cook the pumpkin to make puree with. I have several more cups to go. We may even try some pumpkin pancakes.

All in all it was a great learning experience for ME...yes me. I learned with very little help boogerhead can cook and rather enjoys it. Before her I NEVER let any of the other 4 kids touch the stove before they were teens. One still has never cooked and she's married! I learned that school is what I make it.She has learned alot about pumpkins and cooking, some math, internet use, and how to follow directions. I can't wait for the GERMS!!!!!

Check back tomorrow for boogerhead's adventure with germs.

Boogerhead and the Bad, Meanie Germs

Well, boogerhead hasn't been well and she woke up with a sore throat Sunday. My trusty flashlight verified my fears......STREP!!!  UUUUGGGGHHHH!!!
So, I tell her we have to go to the doctors and she immediately freaks out about shots. So, being the homeschool mom, I use this opportunity to explain our resposibilities to our bodies to keep them healthy, show her pics of strep throats on the web , and somewhat explain germs. Then calm her with the promise of treats if the doc does give her a shot (they didn"t).
So, we are now home and she has decided that tomorrow we will learn more about germs with our handy Magic School Bus Germ science kit. As for now she wants me to clean up the kitchen so she can make cookies.
Later, I will blog and post some pics on this adventure of cooking with boogerhead. Tomorrow will be a nice blog on thos Meanie germs.

Fresh Start

Well, I have decided I need to blog more. Something for me. I need to get some followers and start doing reviews and such. I think it would help me gain some self worth. So, I am going to start blogging on our homeschooling, co-op, cooking, and anything else I can think of.

Quick run through about me and homeschooling. I am a mother to 5 kids and grandma to 3 grandsons. I am down to my 5 yr old daughter at home. She her name is K, but dad calls her boogerhead ( you will need to know this in future posts). So boogerhead and I started homeschooling way too early. I collected curriculum like a true addict......seriously it was a sad time. I have changed curriculum a dozen times, have fretted on the injustice I am doing my baby, and now Ihave slowly and painfully come to the conclusion we are eclectic schoolers. Meaning we are relaxed and pull from here and there. Some days school is just life. She has learned things I haven't even taught her.

More about me: I want to be an organic, all natural homemaker, who makes everything herself like I see on all these frugal homemaker blogs. FYI...not gonna happen. I have found I am too lazy to make my own soap or laundry detergent. I also can not can to save my life. Also, my hubby would rather die than eat a strict vegetarian diet...the man likes his meat. I do try to make healthier meals and boogerhead and I eat lots of veggies and fruits. We also cook alot from scratch. Also, we don't eat ground beef. We use venison, chicken, ground turkey, and fish. So, other than frying some good ol' southern fried chicken, we do eat leaner meats and healthier meals.

Come by tomorrow to see how our Pumpkin cooking adventure went. Since, we don't do Halloween, we did a small unit study on pumpkins and picked a few recipes to try. Boogerhead will be making pumpkin cookies tomorrow so be sure to come back to see the end result!!
